An American Masterpiece
Shot in 1977 by, then UCLA graduate student Charles Burnett, Killer Sheep only got its official - limited- theatre release in 2007.
Centered around of Stan, a slaughterhouse worker in his his late 30s, Killer of Sheep is not your typical narrative; Burnett skilfully shows us snapshots of different episodes of this character's life.
Shot on 16mm film the cinematography is superbe. From the long sequence in the slaughterhouse to the intimate close-ups of the characters, the images are stunning and touching.
PS: Rapper Mos Def used a still from the movie as the cover for his 2009 The Estatic
