Easy Conversation ... Chanel Kennebrew

I first came across miss Kennebrew's work at an art fair in Brooklyn, last year, and I immediately fell under the charm of her Über original Junk*. An illustrator, art director, this multi-talented gal will turn any piece of junk into the coolest accessory.
We had a chat with her and it went her little something like this
Can you please introduce yourself, who is Chanel Kennebrew?
I'm a hyperactive maker/designer and the gal behind Junkprints.com

What did you to be or do growing up?
I always wanted to make cartoons...talk about the ultimate 80's baby! I use to draw the smurfs and the chipmunks off the television all the time. But when I found out that I'd have to draw the same image with slight variations over and over again I thought, why not just make 1 or 2 and sell them for a million instead of drawing a billion and making a lame salary....I'm still working out the 'sell them for a million' part but I think I was on to something ;)

We had a little chat with her and it went a little something like this...
Can you please introduce yourself, who is Kristina Gisors?
My name is Kristina, I'm a freelance stylist from Paris.
I was born and raised in the City of lights,
My mom is from Guadeloupe and my father from Africa.
I have a masters in Cinema. and I originally wanted to be a costume designer for cinema.
When did you start working as a stylist?
After my studies, I took some sewing classes... I then became a dresser for Jean-Paul Gauthier, Chanel and Paco Rabanne. I was also a costume designer for a few theater and dance companies, worked for a press office then a buying office (Bergdorf Goodman, Lane Crawford).
I officially started as a stylist 2 years ago and my first shoot was with Alice Dellal.
Who is your favorite designer or brand and why?
OMG there are so many designers that I like...
Here are my picks for Spring/Summer 2010:
NYC
Alexander Wang: for his cool sportwear, downtown NYC look
Paris
Alexander Mc Queen: for his creativity he's just beyond earth
London
Mark Fast: for his knitted, little, tiny dresses and for the fact that he's stepped up the game by choosing plus size models
Shoes
Atalanta Weller: for her futuristic feminine vision
Men
James Long: for his audacious choice of colours and his accessories

What projects are you working on now?
My own TV show, please keep your fingers crossed for me. I'm also styling Vitaa - French R'nB songstress based in Paris !
What did you want to be or do when growing up?
I dont' really remember... I think, I wanted to be a professional dancer or to own a shop.
Now that I'm old, LOL, I'm 28... I dont know, I would love to own a magazine, a shop, a man, a dog and a house !
What's playing on you Ipod these days?
Miike Snow, Jack Penate, Passion Pit, Santogold, Mapei, Vv Brown, Janelle Monae
Give us some of the trends for this Fall?
Biker style, leather, transparent, studs, eighties and suits
Lady Gaga meets Grace Jones meets Bjork. Fashion, this Fall is very extreme!
What is, according to you, the must-have item (s) of this Fall?
The must have item will be shoulders pads -as well as knee pads.
Just take an old leather or jeans jacket, add a pair shoulder pads, some studs or safety pins et voilà !
Thanks for the tips Kristina; your work rocks!

Local Haunt: Pretty Ballerina

As stated on their website, "yes the rumors are true... " Europe's Pretty Ballerinas has made their North American debut in Montreal. This is a rare treat as most stores first decide to head west to Toronto or other areas in Canada and then several years later conclude that Montreal is a shopping destination. (Just to note: Nathalie Verge, vice-president of operations for the Retail Council of Quebec, said the group's survey found Montrealers spent 9.4 per cent of their disposable income on clothes last year - more than 50 per cent more than the Canadian average per population.) I digress...

The ballet pumps, ballet flats and other quality flat shoes come in a variety of styles. This season they have black patent ballerinas, plum patent ballerinas, snake print ballerinas, leopard print ballerinas, rainbow ballerinas, navy blue ballerinas, green ballerinas, stripey blue suede ballerinas, glittery blue ballerinas, super disco fashion ballerinas, grey patent ballerinas, rainbow flower ballerinas, black satin ballerinas, blue tartan ballarinas and red glitzy Dorothy ballerinas.
Location: 392 Victoria Avenue (near Sherbrooke St. W.)
Sizes: 5 to 12
Cost: starting at $220 (REMEBER THEY'RE HANDMADE)
Bonus: Online shopping

London meets New York

The demise of Dominoe magazine has made way for Lonny, an online magazine that provides accessible design at the click of of finger. The typographic layout of the title calls forth visions of both London (LON) + New York (NY). For the premier issue, click here.
In a nutshell...
Their misson is to reopen the doors of accessible design. By embracing an online platform we provide inspiration at the click of a finger, directly connecting our readers to their favorite products and resources. Our freedom from page limits means that we can share more content in each issue, delivering an intimate look into the way people really live.

At Lonny, we value independent thinking and believe not in following trends but rather in making choices that lead to happiness. We believe that good design and affordable design can coexist and that true inspiration can be found in the teeniest of homes or in the grandest of spaces.
